Highland Games

This is just the kind of event you would expect from what has historically been the largest concentration of Highland Scots in North America! And, it remains the premier celebration of Scottish and Celtic culture in the Upper Cape Fear and Pee Dee Region.

If you’ve never experienced a Highland Games – or if you’ve witnessed scores of them – come one, come all. You’ll thrill as these outsized Scottish lads compete in traditional events, such as tossing the caber, a massive tapered pine pole. Or, the Scottish hammer throw, in which contestants must throw a weighty metal “stone” attached to a shaft. Or the sheaf toss: imagine throwing a 20-lb bale of straw vertically with a pitchfork!

And of course, there’s all the piping and drumming, dancing and Tartan glory of this unique culture. Held the first week of October on the grounds of the John Blue House and NC Rural Heritage House.
